Before our recent trip to Canada we thought it best to exchange some money at a local bank because smaller establishments or private individuals in Canada don’t always accept credit cards or give any exchange on the American dollar. We thought that would be the smart thing to do.

Wrong!

The local bank gave us only a 25 percent exchange rate and then we were told they charge 44 percent to convert it back. The person from whom we purchased our maple products in Canada offered us 45 percent exchange and the local restaurant in St. Georges was offering 40 percent.

If banks consider this a “service,” they should reconsider and list it under the heading of “profit.”

With as many people of French Canadian descent in this community, what they are rendering is a great “disservice.”
