Residents of the unorganized territories in Franklin County are encouraged to visit the county’s Emergency Management Agency office in the county courthouse in Farmington to check out the road names going on the new E-911 signs.

County officials are hoping residents will double-check the listing of their road’s name to guarantee that the wrong names weren’t assigned to any road and also that no roads were missed before they finalize the names and order and place the road signs.

The proposed list of new names will be available for inspection May 12-15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vienna:

Town line found

to be a little off

VIENNA – In a recent map released by the United States Census Bureau, the town line between Chesterville and Vienna was a little off. The misidentification of a line that has been in existence since the mid 1800s didn’t have any impact on property owners in either town.

However, because that line also divides Kennebec and Franklin counties, Franklin County commissioners made sure to remedy the problem after a representative of Vienna pointed out the mistake.

This week, commissioners agreed to notify the census bureau of the mistake.

Coburn Gore: County no longer to pick up trash tab

COBURN GORE – As of Aug. 1, Franklin County will no longer pick up the tab for curbside pickup for residents of Coburn Gore.

County commissioners agreed at their Tuesday morning meeting that after that date, residents may either hire a private contractor to transport their garbage to Eustis or drive it down there themselves. The county does have a contract with Eustis for that town’s transfer station to accept Coburn Gore’s waste.

Coburn Gore is currently the only unorganized territory in the county that has curbside pickup paid for by the county. The savings of stopping the service will be $6,000 annually from the Unorganized Territories budget, said County Clerk Julie Magoon.

FARMINGTON – Franklin County officials are exploring the possibility of hosting the 2004 Maine County Convention.

The event would bring hundreds of representatives from the state’s 16 counties to the area for three days of workshops, conferences and some rest and relaxation. County commissioners are in favor of bring the convention to Franklin County and, according to county clerk Julie Magoon, the event would be very lucrative for county businesses. “This would bring in a lot of money into the whole area,” she said. “It would be great.”

A final decision is expected to be made within the next month. Magoon says if the convention did come to the county, it would most likely be held at Sugarloaf, which has a large convention center that could support that number of people.

Farmington:

Rent-a-cop rate $28 an hour

FARMINGTON – County commissioners approved an increase on Tuesday that would bring the contracted rate for outside entities to rent Franklin County Sheriff’s Department deputies to $28 per deputy per hour.

According to the department, deputies are often hired to monitor events, like high school dances or the Farmington Fair. Before the change, the contracted rate billed was $23, Lt. Niles Yeaton said Wednesday.
