At $65 a ton,
the town’s bulk waste bill was adding up.
MINOT – Selectmen Monday night voted to stop picking up the bill for bulk waste that townspeople haul to Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp.
For the last couple of years selectmen have noted that more and more people are trucking tons and tons of stuff – building demolition material and packed Dumpsters from special cleanup – to the Auburn plant and that the billing at $65 a ton, was beginning to add up.
Checking with surrounding towns and MMWAC in Auburn, selectmen found that Minot stood alone in its policy to pay for the disposal of bulk waste brought in by individuals and building contractors doing business in town.
The town’s new policy goes into effect July 1.
In his report, Road Manager Arlan Saunders told selectmen that Blue Rock’s recleaning activities will start mid-week with paving to follow in mid-July. Focus of this year’s work will be Marston Hill, Pottle Hill and Millett roads.
Fire Chief Steve French told the board that the West Minot Fire Co. had received a grant for $928 from Proctor and Gamble.
The grant was secured thanks to the work of volunteer fireman Scott Davis and it will be used to purchase a suction machine.
In other business, selectmen tabled action on establishing an advertising/hiring schedule for a town administrator until its next meeting and appointed Thomas Verrill as state sealer of weights and measures.
