FARMINGTON – Expecting to be interviewed for a “Down East Magazine” article on alternative energy, L. Herbert “Bussie” York and Brenda Voter York were surprised Monday when Town Manager Richard Davis told them instead that the 2008 town report was dedicated to them.

Despite Monday’s snow, a small gathering of family and town employees were on hand at the Town Office to honor the couple.

“These two Farmington natives, ardent supporters of sustainable farming, committed stewards of the environment and tireless servants of their beloved community are well-deserving of this year’s dedication honor,” notes the Town Report text.

“It’s a tribute to be honored, but there are people more deserving,” Bussie York said. “They deserve this more than I do.”

The couple turned Sandy River Farm into a multi-faceted organic dairy and crop business over the past 50 years.

While serving as leaders of several local agricultural groups, they also served the town as members of the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee and the Budget Committee.

Bussie York has served on the Planning Board since 1987 and as chairman of that board since 1991.
