LEWISTON — There was no professional hangover in Samuel Finn’s game this weekend.
Finn, an 18-year-old defenseman for the Lewiston Maineiacs, spent the better part of the two previous weeks in Colorado with the Avalanche of the National Hockey League on a free agent invitation tryout. He played in a few intra-squad games, but not much more. As an undrafted player, especially one so young, he wasn’t expecting much more than that.
But it did fire him up to come back to Lewiston.
“It was just fun to be back and watch the crowd get all into us and be that excited,” Finn said. “It was awesome.”
On the Maineiacs’ second goal of the game in Friday’s 3-2 win over Baie-Comeau, officials originally credited Finn, who wears number six, with the tally. He was quick to correct them, attributing the goal to its rightful scorer, No. 26 Michael Chaput.
“It was a mistake, it wasn’t even mine,” Finn said. “They must have messed it up while we were celebrating or something.”
That he never once even questioned whether to alert officials to their mistake is a big positive to the coaching staff.
“He’s such a team player, and he’s a leader,” Maineiacs’ coach Don MacAdam said. “He’s a big part of our team on the blue line, and we’re happy he’s back in the lineup now.”
Finn admitted that while he was happy to back in the Maineiacs’ lineup, playing NHL professional for a week wasn’t exactly a hardship, either.
“I had a great time over there,” Finn said. “It’s great to see all the big names there, like (Adam) Foote, (Milan) Hejduk and all those guys. I learned a lot from them. It was nice.”
MISSING IN ACTION
Player introductions came and went before Friday night’s home-opener, and one name stuck out in its absence.
Seventeen-year-old Swedish forward Oskar Orrpars was nowhere to be found. And with good reason.
Orrpars has returned to Sweden indefinitely, a team source said, to deal with family issues. The team would not elaborate.
The departure leaves the Maineiacs with two extra forwards and one spare defenseman on the roster, pending Eric Gelinas’ return from the New Jersey Devils’ NHL training camp. Gelinas is expected to rejoin the Maineiacs on Sunday.
POWER-LESS PLAY
One of the Maineiacs’ pressing issues last season was an inability to score with an extra skater. In 2008-09, Lewiston was just 52 of 357 on the power play, dead last among the league’s 18 teams at 14 percent.
This year didn’t start off much better. In the Maineiacs’ first three games through Friday night, the team was 1-for-19 on the man advantage (5.3 percent). The one the team did score came on opportunity No. 19, though, and tied the game late in the third period Friday.
The units looked solid, but like in many parts of Friday’s game, the Maineiacs couldn’t finish off the plays in front of the Baie-Comeau cage.
HURTING UNITS
Two of the Maineiacs’ six dressed defensemen in Friday night’s contest were not in uniform Saturday, leading the team to dress a pair of forwards — Marco Desveaux and Jean-Francois Plante — on the blue line.
Carrier took a shoulder to the head during Friday’s contest, wobbled to his feet and then fell back to the ice. He was helped off the ice and did not return. The team said Saturday he is suffering from an “upper-body injury” and is out indefinitely.
Zach Shannon also took a vicious hit Friday in his own zone, and was tentative in his play for a while thereafter. Shannon is listed by the team as “day-to-day,” and a team source said Saturday if the playoffs had started, he probably could have played. Holding him out, the source said, was more precautionary because it’s so early in the season.
FORE!
The Maineiacs’ annual golf outing, featuring the team’s players and coaches, is slated for Monday, Sept. 21 at Turner Highlands Golf Course. The team has several items up for auction at the post-tournament dinner, including an NHL jersey signed by former Lewiston sniper David Perron, now with the St. Louis Blues.
The outing will feature several of the team’s skaters at various holes across the course. On some holes, participants will be able to buy Maineiacs players’ shots or putts. All proceeds from the event, including the auction, will benefit the team’s education foundation.
