LEWISTON — On Nov. 17, the entire Franklin and Merrill Hill student and teacher population will get on the Purple Bus, Lewiston and Auburn’s public bus system. The school is embarking on an expeditionary learning experience through which they hope to explore the Lewiston-Auburn community and all its possibilities through a lesson plan loosely patterned after the TV show, The Amazing Race.

The rules for this assignment are that each class will navigate a different bus route, disembarking at three different locations. Each stop will consist of an assignment to be accomplished by the class. The classes will try to visit their three sites and return to the Oak Street station by the end of school.

The students have participated in a survey to identify their understanding of the concept of public transportation and they will also complete a post-experience survey to identify what they have learned. The culminating assessment of this expeditionary learning experience will be the production by students of a television commercial promoting the use of the Purple Bus.

The winning class will be rewarded with a Magical Mystery Tour: on the Purple Bus, of course.
