LEWISTON — Police escorted a young boy off a school bus Thursday morning after students spied an Airsoft pistol in his bag. The bus was bound for Lewiston Middle School.

Lt. Mark Watson said police received a call from the bus driver at 7:19 a.m. They responded to the stopped bus on Rideout Avenue.

“No children were at risk, he wasn’t displaying it and showing it around,” Watson said. “Somebody happened to see it in his backpack, mentioned it to the school bus driver. The school bus driver of course had us come out and make sure we addressed the situation.”

The school and the boy’s parents were contacted. Any potential discipline would be up to the school and its resource officers, Watson said.

An Airsoft pistol holds plastic pellets, he said, “(There’s) no threat to human life. It doesn’t come out with any substantial velocity other than if it hit you on the skin it would be like somebody flicked you.”
