100 Years Ago: 1918

Congressman White delivered the keynote address at the housewarming of the New Auburn Wallace H. White Jr. Club, held in the K. of P. Hall, Pulsifer and Third streets, last night. A large gathering of enthusiastic citizens gathered for this feature of the meeting, and enjoyed, meanwhile, several inspiring talks by other local men. The keynote of the new organization is not to go out to win a political drive, but to retain in office, the man they feel is better fitted for the place.

50 Years Ago: 1968

The appointment of Harold W. Dutch of Auburn as executive vice president of the Lewiston-Auburn Broadcasting Corporation and Hoy Communications Corporation, operators of Maine radio stations WLAM in Lewiston-Auburn and WIDE in Biddeford-Saco, was announced Tuesday by Parker Hoy, president of the radio corporations. A native of Belfast, Dutch attended Emerson College in Boston and is a veteran of Army Air Corps service in WWII. He started his radio career in 1940 and has been associated with WLAM since 1950, the past 10 years as station manager. He currently is serving as second vice president of the Maine Association of Broadcasters and is chairman of the association’s 1968 convention committee. He also is a member of Broadcast Pioneers, a national organization of men and women who have been in radio broadcasting for more than 20 years.

25 Years Ago: 1993

SOUTH PARIS — The Celebration Barn Theater will feature illusionist Bruce Johnson and stand-up juggler Michael Miclon in “Magic and Mayhem” Friday, Aug. 6, and Rick Adam as “The Great Spoofarto,” Saturday, Aug. 7. Performances start at 8 p.m., doors open at 7:30 p.m. “Magic and Mayhem” is a masterful display of juggling, comedy and illusion in the tradition of the great vaudeville comedy teams. Johnson performs a show filled with some amazing illusions, underscored with a generous dose of comedy and audience participation. Audiences are amazed as hundreds of silver dollars are pulled from thin air, or as Johnson performs a daring escape.
