OXFORD — After a two-week investigation by the Oxford Police Department, a Lewiston man was arrested this week and charged with selling cocaine.

Kamau Thompson, 45, was also arrested on outstanding warrants, including two  warrants charging aggravated trafficking and failure to appear, and other aggravated trafficking warrants.

Police searched a room at the Hampton Inn on Route 26 at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and found what they believed to be cocaine. Officers also seized $7,837 in cash.

According to court documents, police began investigating after employees at the four-story hotel at 151 Main St. reported what they believed to be drug activity in one of the rooms.

According to an affidavit, Room 420 was rented Jan. 2, but each day a man would come to the desk and pay cash for additional time. He did so over six days, according to the document.

Hotel workers told police that several people visited the room during those days, with most staying five to 10 minutes.

Police learned that the room had been rented by an Oxford woman whom they described as a known drug dealer. But it was the same unidentified man who continued to pay for additional days in the room, according to the affidavit.

Police began their investigation by securing a room across the hall from Room 420, according to court documents. They were able to watch people coming and going from the room, while other officers monitored the parking lot and took note of license plates of suspected drug buyers.

Investigators said they also spoke with sources who described the man in Room 420 as a drug dealer who often operated under the name of “G” or “X” when setting up trafficking operations.

Police said they were told the suspect, later identified as Thompson, would travel to Massachusetts each weekend to “re-up” his drug supply.

On Wednesday, police secured a search warrant for Room 420 and arrested Thompson. They recovered nearly $8,000 in cash, several cellphones, baggies with powder residue inside them, digital scales and powder found on the floor.

Thompson had bail set at $20,000 cash and was moved to Twin Bridges Jail in Wiscasset on Friday, an Oxford County Jail corrections officer said.

Thompson is scheduled to appear in court March 7.
