Sea Bags, which sells tote bags and other accessories made from recycled sail materials, is opening a new flagship store in Portland and relocating in Freeport.
The Maine-based company said it plans to open a new flagship store at 123 Commercial St. along the city’s waterfront on May 7. The 2,500-square-foot space, formerly home to rug seller Company C, will be much larger than Sea Bags’ existing Old Port location at 25 Custom House Wharf, which will be converted into a Sea Bags factory outlet store.
“We have some very exciting plans in the works to make this new store a true showcase, worthy to be called our flagship,” Sea Bags CEO Don Oakes said in a statement. “Given the size of this space – three times the size of our typical store – we are also planning some new features and fixtures to showcase our products and highlight our ‘distressed nautical’ design aesthetic.”
Sea Bags said it also has signed a new lease in downtown Freeport and will be moving into a larger space at 15 Bow St., across the street from its existing Freeport store. The new location, at the former site of shoe store The Walking Company, is expected to open by June 1.
Sea Bags has 39 stores across the United States in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, Florida, Michigan and California.
