John E. Emery ll

LEWISTON – John E. Emery ll, 68, of Mechanic Falls, Maine, died Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at C.M.M.C in Lewiston, Maine.

He was born at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland on March 10, 1953, son of John and Gladys Emery. In 1971 he graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, and enrolled in the Air Force upon graduation. His first eight weeks of basic training were at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The next 20 weeks he was at tech school at Keesler Technical Training Center at Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi where he was being trained for radio communications technical maintenance. From there he went to England for the remainder of his four-year commitment in high security secret clearance communications for the USSAF.

His first place of employment after the Air Force was at Woodwork Interiors, Inc. in Lewiston from 1976-1979. When he moved to South Carolina, he was employed at BASF as a senior maintenance electrician from 1979-1999. When he moved back to Mechanic Falls, he was employed at Barber Foods and then a short time at BIW and Hood Inc. before retiring in 2016.

He was a former associate pastor at an Assembly of God church in South Carolina and officiated at many funeral services for family members over the years, and he has attended the Vineyard Church of Mechanic Falls since moving back here in 1999. While attending there, he and his wife, Valerie, held weekly Bible studies at the Bucknam Oaks senior living facility along with good friends, Chuck and Laura Vincent for many years.

He was also very actively involved in the community and was practically a Mechanic Falls historian. He was a recent town counselor, a trustee of the sanitary district, and a member of the library committee and historical society.

In addition to being an avid Yankee fan, he was also a member of the Train Collectors Association as he had a deep passion for Lionel trains.

He was formally married and lived in South Carolina for approximately 20 years and had two sons, Jonathan Emery, who still resides there, and Joshua Emery, who resides in Portland, Maine.

On Dec. 26, 1999, he married Valerie Stone Hackett at the Vineyard Church of Mechanic Falls and they were the first couple at the new church to be married there. He has two stepsons, Robert Hackett, and his wife Trina, and his two grandsons Quinn and Sullivan Hackett of Minot, Maine and Stephen Hackett, and his wife, Elyssa, and his three grandsons, Gavin, Callan, and Owen Hackett of Bradenton, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie Emery, of Mechanic Falls and her two sisters, Evelyn and her husband, John Davis of Poland, Maine and Carol and her husband Clarence “Lee” Allen Jr. of South Paris, Maine.

He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Francis and her husband, Gary Cotton, of Mechanic Falls, Robert “Bud” and his wife Penny Emery of Mechanic Falls, Faith and her husband, Ron Tirrell of Mechanic Falls, and Oliver “Ollie” Emery who resides at Rumford Community Home and his wife, Rose Emery of Mechanic Falls.

He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, one of whom, Rachel Coffin, was a “special friend” and devoted Yankee fan just like her Uncle Joe, plus grandnieces and grandnephews as well.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Gladys Emery, and his mother and father-in-law, Gardner and Viola Stone, plus many other family members including Theresa Renee Emery and Annie Pickett.

A time of visiting and sharing with the family will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Chandler Funeral Home in Mechanic Falls. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls.
