GREENSBORO, Vt. – Robert “Bob” Wright Jr., formerly of Auburn, Maine, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2021, just a few weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. A handsome man of impeccable manners and a gentle soul, he was loved by all who knew him. Bob was born on November 5, 1928 in Cambuslang, Scotland, the son of Robert and Martha Wright. Bob grew up in Massachusetts with his Scottish parents and four siblings. He graduated from Melrose High School, and joined the Air Force during the Korean War, where he was stationed back in his beloved Scotland. There he met the first love of his life, Grace Laidler, of South Shields, England. They were married in 1953 and had two children, Catherine and Robert. Bob joined the Chrysler Corporation and held several positions in Maine and Massachusetts while living in Cape Elizabeth and Framingham, respectively. A highlight was his role as Merchandising Manager where he was able to provide Boston sports celebrities, including members of the 1967 Red Sox, with cars from Chrysler. After leaving Chrysler, Bob moved to Auburn where he became affiliated with several area businesses. Bob was active in the Auburn community as a member of Kiwanis, a Trustee of Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute, and a member of the Taylor Pond Yacht Club. Following Grace’s passing in 1982, he married the second love of his life, Myra Putman, who predeceased him in 2013. Bob is survived by his daughter Catherine Donnelly and her husband Scott of Greensboro, Vermont; his grandson Dr. Liam Donnelly and his wife Jessica of Burlington, VT; his granddaughter M. Lauren Donnelly and her fiancé Blake Morell of Boston, Mass, and Karen Parsons of Saxton’s River, Vermont, with whom he enjoyed a special bond. A mainstay of Bob’s life was his love of boats and being on the water. From the time that he built his first boat with his childhood friend Ken Boyd, to his days in Boston piloting his cabin cruiser “Camelot” down the Charles River, to his cocktail cruises on Taylor Pond, Bob was happiest piloting his watercraft. In 1970, Bob and Grace purchased an idyllic stone cottage on Taylor Pond, and Bob was most fortunate to be able to enjoy many years living on his beloved Taylor Pond where he enjoyed sailing, cross-country skiing, gardening, music and feeding treats to visiting neighborhood dogs. He always had a project going on, and was proud that there was not a thing that he could not fix. During his later years on Taylor Pond, Bob was extremely blessed to have caring neighbors and friends, most notably Sue and Peter Bunker and Barbara and Wylie Mitchell, who helped him to be able to live a long and fulfilling life. Throughout his life, Bob was a devoted brother to his sister Marjorie of Orange, Connecticut, who also predeceased him, and her loving family. Bob greatly enjoyed spending winter breaks in Boca Grande, Florida at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, where walking the beach, collecting shells, boating to Useppa Island and enjoying a daily ice cream (Rum Raisin) at the Loose Caboose became favorite pastimes. He had recently moved to Greensboro, Vermont before his illness, where his only regret was that he would miss his beloved friends on Taylor Pond. Bob was an exemplar of how to live a life, always positive, humble, polite and ever helpful, kind and caring. At Bob’s request, there will only be a private family gathering to celebrate his wonderful life.
