100 Years Ago: 1922

Standing room only and very little of that was to be found in the Calumet Club rooms, Tuesday night while the Knocker Minstrels for members only was presented. Those who had other engagements for the evening missed one of the best minstrel performances ever given in this city. Had a booking agent for Keith been In the audience it is reasonable to believe that long time contracts at large salaries would have been offered to the entertainers.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Edward W. Spiller, loan specialist with the Goff Hill and Perryville Projects in Auburn, said that 10 loans and four grants funded for the project area property owners have brought $78,115 into the area. The applications, approved during November, December and early January, include $31,400 for four loans in the Perryville Project; $32,750 will cover six applications from the Goff Hill area; three grants involve the Perryville area for a total of $10,500; one grant in the Goff Hil area is for $3,465. The three percent interest loans are payable in 20 years, it’s reported.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The Lewiston High School Band will host the District 11 Honors Festival Friday. This festival, sponsored by the Maine Music Educator Association, consists of 20 schools and approximately 300 students. Students auditioned last October and were selected to play or sing in three categories: Band, conducted by Marissa Weinstein; Treble Chorus, conducted by Judith Quimby; and Mixed Chorus, conducted by Dr. Greenlee of Bowdoin College. Students will rehearse Friday and Saturday. The climax of the festival will result when these musicians come together at 5 p.m. Saturday in a concert at Lewiston Middle School Auditorium.
