100 Years Ago: 1922
Members of the Stanton Bird Club who went to Thorncrag yesterday morning found two suet cages empty and the feeding boxes in need of food. Many tracks showed visits of many birds. Pine grosbeaks, downy woodpeckers, chickadees, crows and partridges were seen as well as a saucy gray squirrel.

Hannaford Bros. Co, of Portland has taken over a sublease for a food market at the new K-Mart shopping Center being developed on Center Street, Auburn, it was revealed Friday with the filing of the lease account.

At a meeting of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, Northeast Chapter, held at the Ramada Inn on Saturday, Jan. 18, the group heard a talk on Russia by Normand Demers, Commander of the chapter. Demers returned recently from a month in Russia from an assignment by the international Executive Service Corps. He spoke of his work with a shoe factory in Troitsk, in central Russia, south of the Ural Mountains. He also spoke of the economic problems in Russia at the present time and of lifestyle differences between Russia at the present time and of lifestyle differences between Russia and the United States. The northeast chapter was formed last August and was presented with its charter, by Sumner Bray of the DESA National, director of the organization. who also attended the meeting. By-laws were presented to all members by Andy Durisko, executive officer of the chapter. The next meeting is planned for early April. All Navy veterans who served on destroyer escorts during World War II or the Korean Conflict are invited to join the chapter by contacting Demers or Secretary/Treasurer Jack Coady.
