NORWAY – Sally M. Day, 81, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at Norway Center for Health and Rehabilitation on March 25, 2022.
Affectionately known as “Nana” by her grandchildren and many of their neighborhood friends, Sally was born in South Paris on April 11, 1940, the daughter of Carl V. Mills, Sr. and Beverly Bonney Mills. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1958 and Bliss College, becoming a business education teacher. She worked at the Oxford Woolen Mill office along with her parents and uncle, and later worked alongside her husband, Bruce, at Western Maine Graphics, the printing company that they owned in Oxford.
In 1964, she married Bruce H. Day, originally of Porter. They lived in Otisfield for several years before moving to South Paris.
Sally may be best remembered as the biggest high school sports fan in Maine. If there was an Oxford Hills High School game going on, Sally would probably be found there, handing out tootsie roll pops for good luck and as a way to say hello to her many friends. As a former basketball player, she had a particular fondness for the basketball program. She also became a familiar face at Scarborough High School track and volleyball events in support of her grandchildren, Luke and Kacey, and made many new friends with those tootsie roll pops. Her kindness and ease at making friends was admirable. She loved spending time around those friends and family, and hearing about what was going on in their lives.
Sally is survived by her daughter, Darcy Foerster and her husband Doug of Scarborough; grandchildren Lucas and Kacey; and brother, Steve Mills and his wife Dianne of Scarborough.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce H. Day; one brother, Carl V. Mills, Jr. and sister, Sandra J. Mills.
The family wants to thank the incredible staff of Norway Center for Health and Rehabilitation for their care and support of Sally.
A family graveside service and Interment will take place in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Oxford. A celebration of Sally’s life will be shared at a later date.
