DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society invites the community to a Kitten Shower on Saturday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Last spring, hundreds of kittens were brought to the shelter ranging in age from newborn to 6 months. To help care for them, shelter staff and volunteers invite people to participate in the “shower.” Donations such as dry and canned kitten food, Kitten Milk Replacer, Miracle Nipples and bottles, Feline Pine/non-clumping litter, litter boxes, cat and kitten shampoo, fleece blankets, cat toys, and cleaning supplies such as paper towels, are a few of the many supplies needed to help with the upcoming increase in the kitten population.

In addition to the supply drive, there will be a bake sale, raffles, games and an opportunity to learn how people can become a foster parent and help care for the babies as they await adoption. The shelter mascot, Callie, will also be romping about for play and photos. Returnable bottles and cans will also be collected to help raise funds to cover kitten medical expenses in the Bottles for Babies drive.

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society provides a safe haven for over 3,000 sick, homeless, and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area per year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising events and donations from concerned citizens.

The Humane Society is at 55 Strawberry Ave. in Lewiston.  For more information on the Kitten Shower call the shelter at 783-2311 or visit our website at www.SavingPetsInMaine.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gahumane. – Katie, executive director, Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, Lewiston

Readers, I haven’t reminded you in a while, but please remember that Sun Spots needs lead time for date-sensitive events and requests. It’s always best to send in those types of letters a couple weeks ahead of time.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a traveling cosmetologist who provides services to veterans, elderly and housebound people who can’t get to a salon. I was told by Gold Star Moms to contact you. I can be reached at 740-0010 or at Janice3533@gmail.com—Janice, no town

ANSWER: This is the type of service our Sun Spotters are often looking for. My mom so appreciated “her lady” who came to her home to wash and trim her hair. These small grooming activities we take for granted can be overlooked amidst all the other tasks required to keep our elders healthy and safe.

Janice, if you haven’t already, please be sure to share your information with SeniorsPlus (795-4010 or email Info@SeniorsPlus.org), too. I have added you to the Rolodex. Thank you for providing this service. Not only does it help so many folks, but it must be very rewarding for you.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name. We won’t use it if you ask us not to. Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be emailed to sunspots@sunjournal.com.
