Michael Peter Chase

RUMFORD – Rumford Deputy Fire Chief Michael Peter Chase (retired) passed away at his home in Rumford on Thursday Aug. 25, 2022.

Born in Rumford on May 17, 1953, he was a son of Donald and Elizabeth (Schmitt) Chase, Jr. Peter was a graduate of Rumford High School class of 1971. He served with the Rumford Fire Department as Deputy Chief until his retirement. He also worked as a Hazardous Materials Instructor. Following his retirement, he worked for Black Mountain of Maine in the Rental Shop, and worked with his son, Bob, with Mountain Pool Service. Peter also served three terms as a Selectman for the Town of Rumford, served on the Planning Board and County Budget Committee and the Charter Commission.

Peter loved spending time with his family and traveling to events for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, was an avid Sudoku enthusiast and was skilled in carpentry and woodworking.

He was married in Turner on Oct. 12, 2000 to Rhonda Libby who survives, of Rumford. Other survivors include sons Robert Chase and wife, Dianne, of Rumford, Kevin Chase and wife, Stacey, of Sabattus, Jesse Goodwin and wife, Tonie, of North Turner, Keith Goodwin and wife, Sarah, of North Turner, Michelle Gosselin and husband, Steven, of Lisbon; grandchildren Peyton, Adam, Brooke, Michael, Shelby, Morgan, Able, Shaleigh and Elliott.

He was predeceased by brothers Klaus and Horst Schmitt and Gary Chase.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday Sept. 1 at the Parish of The Holy Savior St. Athanasius St. John Church 126 Maine Ave., Rumford. Friends and family are invited to call at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford on Wednesday Aug. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
