The search for a Freeport teenager missing for three days continued Sunday, including from the air, but the 14-year-old had not been found as of late Sunday night.

“We’re still searching,” said Lt. Jason Luce of the Maine Warden Service, the lead agency in the search effort. “We were able to get a Maine Forest helicopter up, and a Marine Patrol plane up. But other than that, we’re just following up on leads and any tips.”

Freeport Police Chief Nathaniel Goodman has asked that anyone who may have seen someone fitting Theo Ferrara’s description to call the tip line at 725-5521, option 2, then option 6.

Goodman also encouraged residents in the area of Flying Point Road in Freeport and Bunganuc Road in Brunswick to search their Ring cameras, particularly for the timespan between 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, in case the cameras picked up Ferrara walking by.

Authorities have asked the public not to search the woods because they might interfere with trained search crews. Ferrara was last seen walking on Flying Point Road, heading in the direction of Bunganuc Road in Brunswick at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said those areas have become the focus of their search. Bunganuc Road is a mostly wooded four-mile stretch of road connecting Brunswick with the Flying Point neighborhood in Freeport. Bunganuc is lined with woods, fields, sprawling estates and farms, as well as a couple of locally operated natural areas such as Calderwood and Chase preserves.

Posters asking for the public’s help finding Ferrara have been affixed to utility poles and signs throughout the area.

Crews from the Maine Warden Service, State Police, Brunswick police and Marine Patrol have joined the search. Eight police dogs and more than 40 search-and-rescue volunteers have been assisting, Luce said. Search planes were grounded Saturday amid high winds, but winds eased Sunday. In addition to the plane and helicopter, Luce said, several aerial drones have been deployed.

There were no new developments Sunday in the search for the missing teen, who lives on Flying Point Road in Freeport, according to authorities.

“We are doing our darndest to find this child,” Luce said Sunday evening. Luce said the search has not been suspended, but darkness limits what dogs and searchers can see.

Ferrara, a freshman at Freeport High School, is 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighs about 125 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white windbreaker, neon-hued shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops. He carried a royal blue backpack.

At a news conference in Freeport, Goodman was asked if the teenager was experiencing personal troubles.

“We always look at things like that,” Luce said. “But, right now, there are no real red flags.”

He has no history of running away from home, police said.

When asked if there were any signs of foul play, Goodman told reporters that “We don’t have any evidence or anything actionable that would lead us to believe that is a factor right now.”

Authorities said Ferrara attended classes at Freeport High on Thursday.
