Saddleback’s 2nd Annual Oktoberfest, held on Saturday, October 8th was exactly what the (mental health) doctor ordered to completely avoid the miss-the-summer (and for me, miss your momma) blues. I didn’t think it was possible, but it was.

It’s not obvious, but I’m half German on my mother’s side. Both of her parents (my Oma and Opa) moved here in the early 1930’s (thank goodness!). I still have relatives in a tiny town west of Bremen as well as Berlin. I grew up going to German festivals and participating in potato peeling contests. As crazy as it sounds, I even had the closest thing to a honeymoon in Germany. Suffice it is to say I was psyched to go to Oktoberfest.

Thankfully, the weather gods chose the perfect lighting to fully appreciate the fall foliage and though there was a slight chill in the air, it was more crisp than cold. Though coffee and hot chocolate were offered, I’m pretty sure the crowd was mostly enjoying beer filled steins along with the bratwurst and maple flavored cotton candy.

The lack of blustery wind also supported a peaceful scenic chairlift ride on the Rangeley Quad. I was lucky enough to get one of the last rides up and it was truly spectacular. I think if I had arrived early enough, I would have ridden up more than once. Pictures/videos just can’t do it justice. Up, up, up in the air and so peaceful and breathtaking. Some things simply must be experienced.

Once back on the ground, everyone I spoke to was having a grand time. There were folks dancing to the live German music band, kids getting their face painted, and lots of fun contests to either participate in or cheer.

Besides the 5k race, the contests included the keg toss, the brat toss, and the men’s and women’s stein hoist.

Thanks to Hight Family of Dealerships for sponsoring and thank you Saddleback!

P.S.  to Saddleback’s event coordinator Erika Roy- Any chance you can offer a potato peeling contest next year? I think that’s the only contest I’d have a chance in… Danke!

She didn’t toss the keg very high but we were all rooting for her!
