NORWAY — The board for Norway Paris Solid Waste informed the Select Board that its fees for disposal will increase across the board within the next 30 days.

The increase is due to higher surcharge and transportation fees being charged to the NPSW for disposal for recycling, members of the board told the Norway Select Board at Thursday’s meeting. NPSW board members said they were operating at a loss, which is not sustainable.

The higher charges are designed to cover its costs and not to make a profit.

Fees for refrigerators and other appliances with freon and mercury will increase from $12 to $18. The other item increasing significantly is mattresses, whose disposal cost will increase from $9 to $20.

NPSW just learned this week that the company that takes away its tires will now add a pick-up charge for those tires.

NPSW will notify the Paris Select Board of its new fee structure at its next meeting on Monday.

In other business, the Select Board approved a license to Town and Country Community Center Association at 99 Town and Country Drive to operate beano/bingo games every Thursday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The board also accepted a $800 gift from an anonymous donor to help pay the cost for decals and markings for the new K-9 unit SUV.

Town Manager Dennis Lajoie was given authorization to sign a deal with the Maine Department of Transportation and Toole Design of Portland for a transportation study of Main Street for up to $140,000. Norway’s share will not exceed $70,000.

Lajoie said four candidates are being interviewed to replace him as town manager when he retires at the end of the year. The town received 18 applications for fire chief, and four have been chosen for interviews. He also expects interviews to begin shortly for a new parks and recreation director.

The town is hopeful to have all three positions filled by Dec. 12.

The board approved voter registration for the Nov. 8 election to be available at the Town Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until Nov. 7. Last minute registrations will be available on the day of voting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
