Richard Hooper

AUBURN – Richard Hooper of Auburn passed away on Dec. 8, 2022. A native of Massachusetts, he was the son of Wilford and Gertrude Hooper.

He attended Wellesley public schools and graduated from Hebron Academy. Subsequently he earned degrees from Bates College and Northeastern University. He was a four year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Following college he was a teaching principal in Minot and Lewiston. In 1966 he was the founding President of Androscoggin Home Health Services where he served as chief executive officer from 1967 to 1981. In 1984 he joined the administration of Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway where a 13 year tenure included ten years as administrator of Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris.

Mr. Hooper was active in numerous community organizations in Lewiston-Auburn, Including a term on the Auburn School Committee and membership on the United Way Board of Directors. He was active in athletics in high school and college, and especially proud of having helped Bates win its first indoor track meet in 20 years over the University Maine in 1954. In later years he enjoyed playing golf with his friend Bob Fallon.

A lifelong baseball fan, he liked to point out that he was born on the Fensway in Boston, literally in the shadow of Fenway Park. As a teenager, his favorite team was the Boston Braves; he was elated when the Atlanta Braves won the World Series in 2021. His favorite activities were reading good history books, working in the yard, and taking long power walks. He loved animals, a wonderful dog and numerous special cats.

Mr. Hooper is survived by his son, Richard Paul Hooper of South Paris; Cheryl Remsburg of Litchfield, N.H., daughter of his late companion, Marion Dover; his ex-wife Dianne of South Paris; and niece Betsy Hooper Dubois of Hudson, Mass. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his daughter, Pamela Jane Rose nephew Chip Hooper brother, Wilford Hooper; and his loving companion, Marion Dover.

No funeral service is planned.
