John A. Chabot

AUBURN – John A. Chabot, 84, of Auburn, died unexpectedly Friday morning April 21, 2023, at his home. He was born in Lewiston on Dec. 23, 1938, one of 14 children born to Arthur and Clara (Gilbert) Chabot. John was educated in local schools and remained a lifelong resident of this community.

He was a Military Veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War period until his Honorable Discharge in January of 1968. Upon entry into the Army, he was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. and was later stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas at the time of his discharge.

On July 15, 1961, he married the former Constance Goyette at St. Mary’s Church in Lewiston and together they settled in Auburn to raise their family.

John worked in the lumber distribution business all of his working years, working more than 40 years for Georgia Pacific in their warehouses in Lewiston and Westbrook until his retirement as a Warehouse Manager in 2001.

He was a member of Holy Cross Church and was active for many years in local Seniors’ and Social Clubs.

John had a great love of history, and a memory to recall dates and historical events with absolute accuracy. Among his favorite enjoyments were hitting baseballs to his grandkids, watching football and, of course, analyzing the game. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing with his grandsons, who nicknamed him “Johnny No Fish,” playing cards with his Friday afternoon buddies at the Armory, Summer lobster bakes with family and friends, watching war movies, listening to old style country music, doing crossword puzzles and his volunteer work with local Senior Centers.

He was a loving, devoted and hardworking husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

John leaves behind his five children, Lisa Roy and husband Michael Parkin of Auburn, Linda Cielinski and husband Stan of Topsham, Steven Chabot and wife Andrea of Atkinson, N.H., Laurie Oakes and husband Kal of Georgetown, Ky. and Laura D’Auteuil and husband Dan of Lewiston; seven grandchildren Colby, Megan, Evan, Jared, Stephen, Devon, and Joshua; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog “Pancake.” He was predeceased by his parents; and 13 brothers and sisters.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church Thursday April 27 at 10 a.m. followed by committal prayers at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

At his prior request, there is no visitation.
