Robert Charles O’Connor
MINOT – Robert Charles O’Connor, 91, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 20, 2023, surrounded by his family.
He was born Dec. 5, 1931, son of Frank and Evelyn O’Connor of Auburn. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1949. After graduation he joined the Coast Guard in 1951 and served as a Radarman Second Class until 1954. In 1953 he married Elizabeth Brown, and together raised their five children in Minot.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his life traversing the Maine woods and streams on the hunt. He especially loved going “upta camp” in the Northern Maine woods. Bob was an excellent card player and was well known for always winning when he played against his grandchildren. Bob coached baseball for much of his life including the Auburn Suburban Little and Senior League and the Auburn Knights of the Pine Tree League. He continued to enjoy attending the sporting events of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a past master of Tranquil Lodge in Auburn and Nezinscot Lodge in Turner. He was a member of the Kora Temple Shrine. He was a dedicated member of West Auburn Congregational Church and a selectman for the Town of Minot for many years. After the Coast Guard he worked as a meat cutter at James Street Market and Dave’s market. In 1972 he opened O’Connor’s Pizza in Auburn with his wife Betty. After 11 years they decided to close the restaurant and he went to work at L&A Tent and Awning.
After retirement he volunteered for many years at Whitings Farm where he enjoyed being out in the field picking vegetables and shooting the breeze with Elmer.
Bob had many sayings that his family lovingly called “grampie’isms”. When asked how he was, Bob would answer “Fair to Middling” or “As good as some and better than most” depending on how he was feeling that day. Other favorite sayings included “In a hundred years we won’t remember” “Chances are slim to none and slim just left town” and most importantly “Don’t give the family a bad name!”
