George Allen Spear

CANTON – George Allen Spear, 62, passed away suddenly at his home the morning of Nov. 26, 2023. He was born in Barre, Vermont on Oct. 18, 1961, the son of George and Katherine Spear.

He lived in Canton for over 40 years and was known to many as a friendly face, a gentle human, and amateur comedian as he always had people laughing. He was a member of the Canton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department for over 10 years. He worked at the Chick-a-dee restaurant for several years and was recently getting ready to retire from Pioneer Plastics as a Coater Operator after 27 years.

George’s love and respect for his family knew no bounds, he would help anyone in need, and he could never say “no” when Amber asked for something, whether he wanted to do it or not. George loved riding in his tractor, moving stuff with his son-in-law, plowing snow after our many Maine snowstorms, or giving his grandchildren rides in the tractor bucket- in their words he was the “best papa ever!” His other likes/hobbies included Dunkin Donuts coffee, sitting in his recliner playing on his many tablets, playing slots at any casino or being on a cruise ship exploring the world with Annette and Erin. One of his favorite destinations was Alaska, where he cruised in September 2022. Although he didn’t love gardening you could always find him summer after summer rototilling the field, pulling potatoes, or putting up fencing with his wife Annette.

He is survived by his loving wife Annette of 41 years, their daughters, Erin Spear and Amber Matthews and her husband, Kevin. George’s grandchildren; Annalaya, Addison and Joseph. George had five living brothers and sisters: Sarah Burgess and husband Danny, Greg, Patsy Vye and husband Timmy, Peter and wife Jodi, and Joel and wife Jamie. George was the loving brother-in-law of Gail Jasper, Melinda Felt and husband Lindy, Alisa Austin and husband Jim, Wanda DePalma and husband Robert. He has several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by his daughter Heather, his brother James, his maternal grandparents Levi and Helen Clough and paternal grandparents, Gilford and Mary, and in-laws Walter and Pauline Jasper.

He was a loving husband, father, and papa. He was loved and will be missed by so many.

Family and friends are invited to George’s visiting hours on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, at Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Road, Jay, from 1 to 3 p.m., at which time his funeral service will take place.
