JAY — The Select Board accepted a state matching grant Monday for firefighter equipment and approved more work on Engine 3, which is being refurbished at Greenwood Emergency Vehicles in Brunswick.
Fire Rescue Chief Mike Booker received information that the department was awarded a Volunteer Fire Assistance grant for $2,739.13, which the town will match. Items to be purchased are four pagers, 35 sets of gloves, 10 helmets, five pairs of pants and five coats, according to the letter.
The Maine Fire Chiefs’ Association Forestry Committee and two forest rangers reviewed applications for the grants submitted. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry received 103 grant applications, according to a letter from the state.
Regarding the work on the Fire Rescue Department’s 2006 Engine 3, in November the board approved having it refurbished for $67,590, factoring in a 10% discount from Greenwood Emergency Vehicles.
While there, several other items were listed as needing work. Booker, two selectmen and LaFreniere reviewed the list and prioritized it. The extra cost is about $8,100 and will come from the department’s capital reserve account.
Among the repairs are the master ignition switch, windshield washer tank, seat belts, rear body grab handles and cab lift pumps. Items still being evaluated include the anti-lock brake system light and oil leak in the engine.
Selectpersons agreed to have the work done and will see what the investigation reveals on the other items.
