The Central Maine Community College men’s hockey team’s season came to an end with a 2-2 tie against Michigan State on Saturday in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The Mustangs (18-7-2) closed out pool play at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III national tournament with a 0-2-1 mark.
Unlike the first two games of the tournament, CMCC scored the game’s first goal Saturday, with Gardiner graduate Gabe Poirier giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead midway through the first period.
That advantage lasted through the first intermission and much of the second period before Owen Murray tied it for the Spartans late in the middle stanza.
Diego Alonso gave the lead back to the Mustangs 1:25 into the third period.
Alex Evans picked up his second point of the game with a goal to tie the contest 2-2 with 12:12 remaining in regulation.
MEN’S LACROSSE
WILLIAMS 15, BATES 14: The Ephs (2-1, 1-0 NESCAC) defeated the Bobcats (2-3, 0-2), notably adding six second-quarter goals during Saturday’s NESCAC matchup in Lewiston.
Williams’ Pearse Glavin and Bates’ Wil Masterson led their respective teams in goals scored, adding four each. Calvin Caputo added another three goals for Williams, and Connor Hartman and Javi Werner each contributed three goals for Bates.
Glavin’s game-winning goal was scored with 10 seconds left in the game, beating Bates goalie Andrew Toland, who made 13 saves.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
UMF 14, ANNA MARIA 12: The Beavers (2-0) beat the Amcats (0-2) after adding six goals in the fourth quarter during Saturday’s game in Paxton, Massachusetts.
Ruby McMinis scored six of UMaine-Farmington’s 14 goals, and Oxford Hills grad Ashlee Farrar finished with five goals. Bethel native Sadie Harvey also scored for the Beavers, and Kate Nowell made seven saves to earn the win.
For Anna Maria, Kyana Altif and Raegan Hachey each scored three goals.
WILLIAMS 11, BATES 0: The Ephs (3-0, 1-0 NESCAC) rolled over the Bobcats (2-3, 0-2) with a NESACAC shutout in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Claudia Russell led the scoring for Williams with four goals, two in the first quarter. Cece Tauber and Lauren Morganlander also each added two goals for Williams.
Avery Lehman and Abigail Ziehl each made six saves in goal for Bates.
BASEBALL
BATES 8, BARD 6: The Bobcats (4-3) defeated the Raptors (2-1) in the first game of a doubleheader after scoring four runs in the eighth inning in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
Brandon Biggane, Chris Cimino and Keagan Ryan each tallied two runs for Bates. Ian McAslan earned the win on the mound with three scoreless innings.
The second game was suspended due to unplayable weather with Bates leading 3-2 in the top of the fifth.
Biggane had the lone hit in the second game for the Bobcats, who went ahead when Jack Margiloff scored on a wild pitch before the game was suspended. Biggane and Jack Brennan also scored runs, while Nolan Hobbs scattered four hits and one run while striking out three in three innings as the Bates starter.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday at 12 p.m. in New York.
UMF SWEEPS MCLA: The Beavers (2-3) picked up their first two wins of the year by breaking out the bats in a doubleheader sweep of the Trailblazers (2-4) in Sanford, Florida.
University of Maine at Farmington won the first game 9-6, then won 10-8 in eight innings in the second game against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Mt. Blue grad Jayden Meader had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, and Oxford Hills grad Jonny Pruett also drove in two runs for the Beavers.
Pruett’s single in the top of the eighth inning in the second game scored the game-winning and insurance runs. It was Pruett’s third hit of the game and he finished with four RBIs in the contest.
Ryan Sargent and Sam Parsell, who both scored on Pruett’s go-ahead hit, each had two hits and three runs in the second game. Meader added another hit and two RBIs to his totals for the day, and Monmouth grad Matt Marquis added a hit of his own.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
BRYANT 84, MAINE 58: Rafael Pinzon scored 35 points and sparked a 24-6 run midway through the first half as third-seeded Bryant rolled to an 84-58 win over sixth-seeded Maine in an America East men’s basketball quarterfinal Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
Pinzon was 14 of 20 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, as the Bulldogs (21-12) overwhelmed Maine (15-18) with excellent outside shooting. Bryant was 11 of 17 (65 percent) from behind the arc and 32 of 54 overall (59 percent).
Maine led 14-11 before Bryant surged ahead with the help of four consecutive 3-pointers – two each by Pinzon and Tyler Brelsford.
After trailing 47-36 at halftime, the Black Bears got as close as four points early in the second half, but Bryant quickly regained control with a 17-1 run.
Daniel Rivera added 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Sherif Gross-Bullock had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Bulldogs.
Peter Filipovity scored 16 points for Maine, whose last America East tournament win was in 2005.
