WATERVILLE — The UMaine-Farmington women’s lacrosse team bolted past Thomas College in the second half to earn a 14-13 victory on Monday.
The Beavers trailed 10-7 with 12:14 left in the third quarter but two goals by Oxford Hills’ graduate Ashlee Farrar and one apiece from Ruby McMinis and Lauren Girouard put them up 11-10 heading into the fourth.
Thomas’ Alia Chasse tied the game with a goal about two minutes into the final period, but UMF took control with three straight goals in less than two minutes: one by former Mt. Blue standout Emma Dunn and two by Abby Trefsger.
The Beavers’ three-goal lead was too much for the Terriers (1-7) to overcome, though they came close. St. Dominic Academy graduate Isabella Pelletier scored with 2:18 left in the game and Mary LaRochelle put one in with 1:33 left.
McMinis and Trefsger led the way for UMaine-Farmington with four goals apiece.
Chasse scored four and Pelletier tallied three goals for Thomas, which led by as many as four goals late in the first half.
Beavers goalie Skye Cotnoir made six saves, and Gwendolyn Schillie stopped 11 shots for the Terriers.

UMF SPLITS WITH UNE: UMaine-Farmington (7-5) earned a split with the University of New England (4-10) and nearly pulled off a sweep, taking the second game to the ninth inning before the Nor’easters prevailed 3-2.
After UMF took the opener 7-5, the Beavers opened the second game with a run in the top of the first inning, scored by Abby Wrinn off a single up the middle by Maddie Pike.
Their 1-0 lead held up until UNE’s Hannah Lappin hit a ground-rule double to left center that brought home Delaney Whitten and tied the game.
The game went to extra innings when neither team scored in the seventh, though UMF left two batters on base.
Jessica Dow scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to put the Beavers back on top, but Lappin drove in another run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Nor’easters won in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Hannah Irons that scored Elise Connor.
In the opening game, Dirigo High School graduate Katie Morse drove in three runs as UMaine-Farmington scored four unanswered to overcome a two-run deficit and win 7-5.
The Beavers trailed 5-3 until Morse doubled down the right-field line and drove in Pike and Wrinn to tie the game.
Wrinn doubled home Emily Collins for the go-ahead run in the sixth, then Pike scored in the seventh on Morse’s sacrifice groundout.
Pike finished with two this, two runs and two RBIs. Wrinn doubled and scored three times for UMF. Mack Bergen (3-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and three unearned runs.

AREA GRADS HONORED: Four former area high school standouts now competing for the University of Southern Maine garnered recognition from the Little East Conference on Monday.
Gray-New Gloucester graduate Zoe Barnes was named the women’s Field Athlete of the Week, and former Lisbon star Kiana Goldberg was selected as the Track Rookie of the Week.
Barnes won both the shot put and discus at the SNHU Sprint Invite on Saturday. Her winning throw of 12.70 meters in the shot put is 27th-best in the country in Division III and the ninth-farthest mark in program history. Her best toss of 42.45 meters in the discus ranks sixth in program history and 12th in the nation.
Goldberg won the 100-meter hurdles (15.03 seconds) and was third in the 200-meter dash (26.79) at the SHNU Spring Invite. Her hurdles mark is fourth-fastest in program history and fifth in the Division III East region.
Two USM freshmen on the men’s side also were honored. Edward Little graduate Dru Hyndman earned LEC Field Rookie of the Week and Poland’s Nick Garey has been tabbed Track Rookie of the Week.
Hyndman won the long jump at the SHNU meet. His best leap of 6.78 meters is second in the East region and sixth in program history.
