Edward Little High School announced the hiring of Kevin Smith as the new varsity boys hockey coach in a media release Thursday.

Smith was previously a varsity assistant and the junior varsity coach for the past four years under Norm Gagne, who retired at the end of the season. He is an Edward Little graduate, playing for the Red Eddies before extending his career to the collegiate level at the University of Southern Maine.

FOOTBALL

JOHNSON HIRED AT POLAND: Poland Regional High School has hired Seth Johnson to be its varsity football coach, athletic director Don King told the Sun Journal on Thursday.

Johnson coached Sacopee Valley last season and led the Hawks to a 4-3 regular-season record before advancing to the semifinals in the Eight-man Small School South Division. He replaces Gus Leblanc, who died in February.

Johnson is also the varsity baseball coach at Gray-New Gloucester High School.

SOFTBALL

MT. ABRAM 12, TELSTAR 2: Adrianna Stinchfield pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and the Roadrunners (4-9) used a big bottom of the fifth inning to finish off the Rebels (2-11) early in Salem Township.

Mt. Abram scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Ari Dereszynski and Ruby Forsley each had two hits, with Forsley driving in two runs and Celia Rose collecting three RBIs.

Sarah Chase spoiled Stinchfield’s no-hit bid with a single. Viv Charette drove in a run and scored a run. Karen Marshall also drove in a run for Telstar.

OAK HILL 13, DIRIGO 6: The Raiders (7-6) pulled away thanks to a six-run fourth to beat the Cougars (8-4) in Wales.

Sierra Lane had the lone multi-hit game for Oak Hill, who only had five hits but the made the most of 12 walks and five Dirigo errors. Eliana Smith walked three times, drove in two runs and scored twice. Izzy Whitaker pitched a complete game for the Raiders, striking out nine and not walking any batters.

Abby Luczynski had three hits, including a double, for Dirigo. Lana White also doubled, while Kiera Reny tripled and drove in two runs. Reny and Xandria Libby each had two hits.
