WILTON — The Wilton Board of Selectpersons tabled a scheduled public hearing for the town’s revised cannabis ordinance at the meeting on Tuesday, May 21. The hearing was scheduled for Thursday, May 30, at 4:30 p.m. at the Wilton Town Office, 158 Weld Road.
The Select Board tabled the agenda item after voting unanimously to move forward with the warrant articles for the upcoming annual town meeting but omitted the article pertaining to the revised cannabis ordinance [Article Four].
Selectperson Phil Hilton was not present to cast a vote.
Town Manager Maria Greeley advised against moving forward with Article Four until the Select Board has seen and approved the finalized ordinance.
Article Four had a placeholder ordinance in place while the revised ordinance was drafted and finalized, Greeley stated.
Vice-Chair Mike Wells, who is also a member of the Cannabis Ordinance Committee, stated the committee has a draft of the ordinance that has been viewed by two lawyers with minor comments, specifically in reference to renewal fees.
Greeley stated that there would need to be a follow-up required with the lawyers as well as the Select Board before a public hearing could be held and the article go to the town meeting.
“As a town manager, I’m supposed to provide this ordinance to the Select Board,” Greeley stated. “There can’t be boxes left unchecked.”
Chairperson Tiffany Maiuri shared that she felt it would a safer option to withhold the article from the annual town meeting, which is currently set for Monday, June 17, and schedule a special town meeting to enact the revised cannabis ordinance following the annual town meeting.
Currently, the town has a moratorium on all cannabis licenses that was adopted in October of last year and extended in early April. The expiration date of the moratorium is set for Oct. 11, or until a new ordinance is adopted.
The Select Board decided to table the public hearing for the revised ordinance until they have seen the final draft of the ordinance. Once approved, a public hearing will be scheduled and followed by a special town meeting to enact the ordinance.
In other business, the Select Board voted to approve a liquor license renewal for Ambition Brewery and to approve new license for the property belonging to Two 80 Main LLC, which is located at 280 Main Street.
The Select Board approved a request from FOWL [Friends of Wilson Lake] to close the Wilson Pond public boat ramp and parking area on Friday, Aug. 2, from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
FOWL will be hosting boat rides on six pontoon boats during that time. It was advised by the Select Board those who wish to be on the lake to launch before 12:30 p.m. or select a different location to launch.
The boat rides will be provided in conjunction with the annual Wilton Blueberry Festival, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3.
Last year’s boat rides were canceled due to weather concerns, and the previous year they were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Wilton resident James Butler asked the Select Board to coordinate with FOWL to leave access to Stinchcomb Lane open.
“During that time, we have family members that can’t walk down the hill,” Butler shared. He added that he had reached out to FOWL to coordinate the efforts but had not received a response.
The Select Board voted unanimously to approve the closure with Greeley stating she would reach out to FOWL to coordinate with Butler’s request.
