WALES — Voters at Saturday’s annual town meeting will decide whether to borrow $1.28 million to improve the Sabattus Pond dam and buy a firetruck, and $440,000 for road construction.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the municipal center at 175 Centre Road.

The 43 articles on the warrant also include electing a selectman/assessor for a three-year term, a director for Regional School Unit 4, three Planning Board members, three Budget Committee members and two Board of Appeals members.

The three significant expenditures are $400,000 as the town’s share to repair and upgrade the dam, $880,000 for a firetruck, and $440,000 recommended for road reconstruction. The dam repair and the firetruck would be financed through issuing bonds. No road reconstruction was done last year due to a bridge replacement. Oak Hill Road is scheduled for major reconstruction.

Funding the municipality, public works, volunteer fire department, first responders/rescue department and transfer station are also on the warrant.

The proposed municipal budget for fiscal year 2025 is $1.53 million, an increase of $123,695 over last year’s $1.41 million.

There is also a land use ordinance change to allow for an accessory dwelling, which is defined as a self-contained unit located within, attached to, or detached from a single-family dwelling on the same parcel of land.

The change would allow accessory dwellings in all residential zones that permit single-family homes and may be developed with new or existing single-family homes. The accessory dwelling may be attached to or detached from the principal dwelling.

A complete definition is available on the town website.
