POLAND — The Select Board on Tuesday approved refunding $789.89 to a disabled military veteran for the vehicle excise tax he paid in January.

At the meeting the board became aware of a Maine law passed in 2021 that provides a motor vehicle excise tax exemption for veterans who are receiving benefits based on 100% permanent service-connected disability.

The law is titled “An Act to Exempt Certain Disabled Veterans from the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax.”

The man said he was unaware of the law and had to inform the town of his exemption when he registered his automobile.

In other business, the board approved accepting a $50,000 Community Action Grant that will go toward HVAC expenses at the Ricker Memorial Library.

The Select Board also authorized spending up to $5,892 from the town’s allotment from the American Rescue Plan Act toward the purchase of a utility vehicle for light building and grounds duties. It is the last of the allotment.
