Wouldn’t You? A Center Street, Auburn, resident reported to police last night he’d just heard a scream in the Whitney Street area.

Patrolman Stephen Page was sent to the scene and found the situation not as serious as it might have been.

There had, indeed, been a scream, even a series of them. It seems a young lady in the area was out hunting for nightcrawlers, and came upon one larger than she thought frightened her and, being a woman, her first reaction was to scream, so this is exactly what she did!

Most visitors to the Drane household can’t help but chuckle when they’re introduced to the family dog, a basset hound called Damage.

The dog and the name couldn’t be more mismatched, its owner admits. “She’s a very lethargic dog,” said Josephine Drane. Damage spends much of her time lounging-when not sleeping. “She opens one eye and the other is half closed.” Damage has never chewed shoes, destroyed household items or ruined any furniture.

So how did she get her name? Teenagers.

“It was our daughters’,” Drane said. “When we got her 10 years ago, our daughters were in their teens.”

A look at the names of dogs licensed in Lewiston-Auburn reveals a couple of interesting facts. One: There’s only one dog named Damage. Two: Dog names that used to be common — King, Spot, Rex, Prince — have given way to new, trendy canine titles. Now the most popular dog name in Lewiston is Max; the most popular name in Auburn is Bear.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
