100 Years Ago: 1924

The American Legion Minstrels given Thursday evening in Memorial Hall was one of the best things given in Oakland for a long time. Samuel Freeman of Waterville was the director. One half of the proceeds will go to the Oakland High School Alumni Association toward the new athletic field.

50 Years Ago: 1974

A number of items stolen in a break at the Lewiston Recreation Department at Memorial Armory have been recovered, police reported today. Detective Captain Robert Soucy said the stolen property includes two five-foot-tall amplifiers, valued at about $800.

25 Years Ago: 1999

The prolonged strike at two General Motors parts plants has forced Gates Formed-Fibre Products to temporarily lay off more than one-third of its workforce, the plant announced Friday.

And an economic analyst believes that if the strike continues to affect local workers for several more weeks, it could have a profound effect on the local economy.
