DEAR SUN SPOTS: A recent article indicated that Concord Coach Lines will no longer be providing service to the Lewiston-Auburn area and that a new bus line will be taking over.

I’m curious if there will ever be bus service from the Lewiston-Auburn area to the Portland Jetport, like the bus service from Portland to Logan Airport in Boston. I think there could be a demand for this service.

Are you aware of any transportation available to the jetport from L-A? I know I can always count on you to find answers. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: The lack of public transportation in our dear state is a frustration to many, including me, especially when considering Maine’s aging population and the distance between our major cities and Boston. Why we can’t do better with this is a question I often ponder.

On May 17, Concord Coach Lines announced they will no longer be providing service originating in Lewiston for intercity travel or to/from points going north and south. This includes traveling to Boston, Portland, Augusta and Bangor.

Moving forward, the Maine Department of Transportation is introducing a new contracted service. RTW Inc. will offer enhanced frequency of service between Auburn and Portland. More details are here: https://www.maine.gov/tools/whatsnew/index.php?topic=DOT_Press_Releases&id=12803581&v=article2015 . The routes include multiple stops each day to the Portland Transportation Center, but sadly, not to the jetport.

Also, Greyhound provides limited service from Bates College (56 Campus Ave.) to the Portland Park & Ride at 274 Marginal Way. Once you get to Portland, you can hire a cab, Lyft, or Uber to the jetport.

After writing this lengthy answer (where I obviously have blown off a bit of steam), I suggest you all write to MDOT and to your legislators to voice your concerns. The “pen” (aka your computer) is a mighty instrument. Use it.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the letter about the found family Bible belonging to Miranda Glover (June 17 Sun Spots), I suggest that David get a short-term subscription to Ancestry.com to research further. The first record of Miranda has the middle initial “C” and the second has the middle initial “G”. There’s only mention of children under the second record. — Pam, no town

ANSWER: Pam sent me an Ancestry record which I’ll attempt to explain: Miranda Glover was born in 1818 and died in 1901. She married Robert Glover and in the record, a daughter, Carrie Stevens Cantello, is listed. There are other children listed on the Ancestry site. Miranda is buried in the Hebron Churchyard Cemetery.

After looking at the attachment sent to me, an error may have occurred with Miranda’s middle initial when her death was recorded. The first record is typed and the second record is handwritten. It’s difficult to tell if the middle initial in the handwritten record is a “C” or a “G.”

It’s also possible that after Miranda married, she changed her birth-given middle name (and initial) to her maiden surname. That’s not an uncommon thing to do.

I hope this information gives you a little trail of breadcrumbs to follow as you attempt to return the bible to its rightful owners. Please keep us informed, David. And thank you Pam, for putting the time in to help a fellow Sun Spotter!
