NORWAY — A Paris man was arrested and charged Tuesday night after police say he struck an Oxford officer with a vehicle and assaulted him.

Maine State Police said in a news release that at about 6 p.m. Oxford Police Department Reserve Officer Joe Correia, 31, of Norway “was off duty and outside his vehicle when he was struck by a vehicle on Crockett Ridge Road in Norway,” according to Maine Department of Public Safety public information officer Shannon Moss.
After he was hit by the vehicle, Correia and the male suspect, Michael Carleton, 29, of Paris, allegedly got into a physical altercation. Police said Carleton was driving the vehicle that struck Correia.
Carleton was arrested and taken to Oxford County Jail. He was charged with Class A aggravated assault and Class C reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
Oxford police Chief Rickie Jack said Correia was transported from Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Moss said “he is having surgery for non-life-threatening injuries.”
Maine State Police are handling the investigation. Norway police Chief Jeff Campbell said that Norway police briefly responded to the incident before the state police took over the investigation.
Requests to Oxford County Jail for information on Carleton’s detention were deferred until Wednesday.
Moss said there is no threat to the public, and that the investigation is ongoing.
