As a teacher in the Lewiston school district, a parent, a widow and a homeowner in the district, I understand the fear of increased taxes due to increased spending.

I also know if we don’t pass this budget, many people will lose their jobs. These educators play important roles and if we cut them, it’ll leave a gaping hole in our school communities.

Over 15 years of teaching, it’s become painfully clear the needs of our students have changed. We’re past “children should come to school ready.” We (all school staff) have to ensure our students have their basic needs met to be ready. From brushing students’ hair, snacks, a place for a nap, underwear or clothes, shoes, to a jacket. Some of these are donated, but a lot are out of educators’ own pockets.

We don’t have enough teachers to staff schools. Teachers are leaving the field because of the lack of respect or support from their community. We aren’t teaching for fame or money. It’s about the kids. But there comes a time where it becomes too much to not do something.

I urge residents to vote in favor of the budget, of our students and educators. Yes, stats aren’t where they should be, but we can’t get there with less support.

I also urge residents to substitute in schools; to volunteer or attend school board meetings. To stay informed and see firsthand the needs and the incredible staff we have who are making positive differences in children’s lives.
