Mark Gilchrist of Orlando, Fla., rolled out of town Thursday afternoon on a mission to chronicle the lives of 1,000 unusual Americans in all 50 states.

Gilchrist, who attended Brunswick High School and the University of Maine, plans to travel by motorcycle, spending at least a week in each state, interviewing unusual but usually anonymous people. Gilchrist will write as he roams, posting stories on the World Wide Web. He hopes people tune in and suggest story ideas.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
