WATERVILLE — A Vassalboro man who allegedly led police on a chase Saturday night through Waterville and Oakland and then fled the scene was arrested and charged Sunday on multiple charges, officials said.

Christopher Ratte, 38, was found in the basement at a home in Vassalboro, according to Maj. Jason Longley, commander of support services for the Waterville Police Department.

Longley said Monday in an announcement to the news media that Waterville police Sgt. Haley Fleming stopped a white Infiniti being that Ratte was driving at about 8 p.m. Saturday on College Avenue. Ratte fled the scene in the Infinity and led officers on a chase that lasted about 10 minutes on various side streets in Waterville and Oakland, according to Longley.

Longley said Monday the Infiniti struck Waterville police Officer Nate Bernier as Ratte attempted to flee the traffic stop on College Avenue. Bernier was not injured.

Longley said he did not have the exact speeds reached during the chase, but the police report references speeds in excess of criminal speed, which is 30 mph or more above the posted speed limit.

“Eventually, the chase was terminated and officers from the Waterville Police Department, Winslow Police Department and Oakland Police Department saturated the area in hopes of locating the subject,” Longley wrote in his announcement.

At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Infinity was found behind a business on Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville. Waterville police and the Maine State Police used trained police dogs in the search for the suspect, but were unsuccessful, according to Longley.

Ratte was charged with five counts of aggravated reckless conduct, driving to endanger, criminal speed, eluding an officer, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of refusing to submit to arrest or detention, aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation and failure to give correct name and date of birth.

Ratte is being held without bail at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta. He is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 9, a jail spokesman said Monday.
