AUBURN — The historic Court Street Baptist Church, built in 1869, is for sale.

The 129 Court St. building was recently listed as a “rare commercial development opportunity” with a $450,000 price tag.

The 25,000-square-foot building, crowned with a lofty spire, is adjacent to the Androscoggin County Building, one of the most historic structures in the region.

The church was built of brick with brown stone trimmings. Capable of holding about 800 people, it was dedicated in 1870 after an earlier chapel on Spring Street proved inadequate for a growing congregation.

It appears the church’s 825-pipe Hook and Hastings organ, built in the 1870s, is part of the deal. It is shown in photographs with the real estate listing along with 1910-era stained glass windows.

Originally called the Spring Street Baptist Church, the congregation merged with the neighboring Court Street Free Will Baptist Society in 1930, whose building was razed.

An education wing was added to the church in the 1960s in a bid to keep up with the soaring number of Baby Boom-era children.

Many large churches in the community have closed their doors in the past few decades and some of their buildings have been demolished.

Representatives of the church could not be reached Thursday.

The church has been listed for sale since mid-May.

The property listing says the building has “move-in ready classrooms and offices, high ceilings and character.”

“With favorable market conditions, supportive regulatory environment and a strategic location, this property is primed for success in the competitive commercial real estate landscape,” it says.
