GOLF

Caleb Manuel of Topsham shot a 5-under 66 in the second round of the Explore NB Open – a PGA Tour Americas event – and was just above the projected cut line when play was suspended Saturday because of bad weather in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Manuel was at 7 under overall, in a tie for 58th place and 10 shots off the lead. He shot a 69 in Friday’s first round.

Despite a two-day total of 4 under, Cole Anderson of Camden was three strokes below the projected cut. Anderson also carded a 66 in the second round after opening with a 1-over 72.

PGA: Ludvig Aberg overcame a pair of bogeys early on the back nine with three late birdies that carried him to a 5-under 65 at the Scottish Open, slightly dampening the enthusiasm of a gallery fully behind local star Robert MacIntyre.

Aberg was at 17-under 193 as he goes for his first victory of the year, and third in a career that began only 13 months ago after leaving Texas Tech as the top player in college golf.

MacIntyre surged to a two-shot lead at one point but closed with a bogey to drop two shots behind Aberg after a 63.

Adam Scott (64) was three shots behind in pursuit of his first victory in more than four years.

LPGA: Stephanie Kyriacou of Australia posted seven birdies in a 4-under 67 and will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Evian Championship in France.

Kyriacou was at 14 under overall. Ayaka Furue of Japan (70) and Lauren Coughlin of the United States (65) were tied for second.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Steve Stricker chipped in twice for birdie on the last five holes and shot a 3-under 67 at Firestone to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Kaulig Companies Championship in Akron, Ohio.

Stricker is trying to win the senior major championship for the third time in four years. He chipped in on the par-4 14th and 18th holes, the last getting him to 9-under 201.

Ernie Els (64) and Robert Karlsson (66) were tied for second.

LIV: Anirban Lahiri of India shot a 5-under 66 to take a four-shot lead at the LIV Golf Andalucia tournament in Sotogrande, Spain.

Lahiri was at 7 under after two rounds. Danny Lee of New Zealand was his nearest chaser at 3 under.

BASEBALL

FUTURES GAME: Cincinnati’s Cam Collier and Atlanta’s Drake Baldwin hit 400-foot solo home runs as the National League beat the American League 6-1 on Saturday in Arlington, Texas, in the All-Star Futures Game featuring top prospects.

Portland Sea Dogs catcher Kyle Teel was 2 for 2 with two doubles for the AL, and Sea Dogs shortstop Marcelo Mayer was 0 of 2. Both entered the game in the fifth inning of the seven-inning game.

Sea Dogs outfielder Roman Anthony didn’t play in the Futures Game but won the skills competition.

• Tyler Miller hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and Blaze Jordan added a two-run single in the eighth, leading the Sea Dogs to a 5-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats in Hartford, Connecticut.

Isaac Coffey (6-2) limited Hartford to three hits in five scoreless innings. He struck out six and walked none, though he did hit three batters.

Nick Decker drove in Portland’s final run with a double in the ninth.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Ty Gibbs will lead the field to green for Sunday’s Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway, the site of his first career start in 2022.

Gibbs, 21, turned a lap of 170.039 mph in the No. 54 Toyota to earn the pole for the 400-mile race. The grandson of NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs has yet to win in 71 career Cup races.

His Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin, will start third and fourth. Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron turned a lap of 169.661 mph and starts second.

• Cole Custer drove away from Justin Allgaier over the final laps at Pocono Raceway to give the 2023 Xfinity Series champion his first win of the year, earning a playoff spot for Stewart-Haas Racing in its farewell season.

Custer was the series points leader going into the race, and ended his winless drought in the No. 00 Ford on the 2½-mile track.

Allgaier placed second. Cup regular William Byron finished third, Sheldon Creed fourth and Taylor Gray fifth.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia surged ahead on the last climb to win the mountainous 14th stage and extend his overall lead to nearly two minutes.

Pogacar caught up with and overtook his UAE Emirates teammate, Adam Yates, to win the 99-mile stage in the Pyrenees.

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark crossed the line 39 seconds behind Pogacar but moved into second place overall, ahead of Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel.

Pogacar’s lead over Vingegaard is 1 minute, 57 seconds.

SOCCER

U.S. WOMEN: Sophia Smith scored in the 64th minute, and the United States got revenge for a loss to Mexico earlier this year, earning a 1-0 victory at Harrison, New Jersey, in a tuneup for the Olympics.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Denver first-round pick DaRon Holmes II is expected to miss the upcoming season after tearing his right Achilles on Friday night in the Nuggets’ NBA Summer League opener, The Athletic and multiple other media outlets reported.

Traded to Denver after being selected No. 22 overall by Phoenix, the 6-foot-10 Holmes was the Atlantic 10 Conference’s co-player of the year last season while playing for Dayton.

HOCKEY

NHL: The New York Rangers and up-and-coming defenseman Braden Schneider have agreed on a two-year, $4.4 million contract extension.

Schneider had career highs last season in games played (82), assists (14) and points (19) and tied his career high with five goals. He ranked second among Rangers defensemen in hits (167) and blocked shots (133).
