When a top finish in one race means a guaranteed spot in another, bigger race this season, Trevor Sanborn has made it happen.
Last month, Sanborn won a 100-lap qualifier at Oxford Plains Speedway to earn a provisional spot in the July 3 Celebration of America 300 at the track. Sunday, he won the 150-lap Pro All Stars Series Super Late Model feature at Spud Speedway in Caribou, which earned him a provisional spot in the Oxford 250 on Aug. 25.
Sanborn, the pole winner, led every lap but had to hold off some big names to win Sunday’s race. It was a non-points event for the PASS SLMs, but the top two points leaders and former series champions, DJ Shaw and Johnny Clark, crossed the stripe right behind Sanborn. Also in the field were former Oxford 250 winners Jeremie Whorff and Ben Rowe, who placed fourth and sixth, respectively. Brandon Barker finished between them in fifth.
ROBBINS RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE
Sanborn was the first finisher not on the podium in Saturday’s Oxford Championship Series SLM feature at Oxford Plains Speedway. At the top of the podium was Ryan Robbins, who won his first SLM feature at the track since May 2019. Tim Brackett was the runner-up, followed by Evan Roy ahead of Sanborn.
Other winners at Oxford Plains on Saturday included: Thomas Richards (Thunder Stocks), Cody Childs (Rebels), Jordan Russell (Limiteds), Tyler Connolly (Mad Bombers), Brady Childs (Street Stocks), Matt Morneau (Cruisers) and Jaxson Moreside (Rookies).
WISCASSET WINNERS
There were a double dose of division doubleheaders at Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday night because of rainouts earlier in the season. That meant two chances to capture the checkered flag in both the Late Model Sportsman and Modifieds divisions.
In Late Model Sportsman, Brandon Fowler topped the field in the first 40-lap feature, and Tiger Colby took the honors in the second 40-lapper. In the Modifieds, Adam Chadbourne and Zach Bowie each won 30-lap features.
Other feature winners from Group 2 action were Alec Brown in Roadrunners and Dan McKeage Jr. in Strictly Streets.
NEWMAN IN NEWEST NEAR CLASS
The 26th induction class for the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame was announced Monday, and among the eight new members to be enshrined is late Hollywood actor Paul Newman.
Among his many talents and interests, Newman was both a race car driver and owner, with his first start coming at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway, and his final race also in the state, at Lime Rock Park.
Other inductees include Dale Shaw, Skip Barber, Peter Daniels, Russ Dowd, Mike Greci, Rick Martin and Bobby Seymour.
The newest class will be inducted at a ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
