The LA Maples are looking for a new league going forward.
The women’s semipro basketball team announced in an Instagram post Wednesday that their games at the Lewiston Armory set for Saturday and Sunday have been canceled after their opponent, the Mount Vernon Shamrocks of New York, left the Women’s American Basketball Association.
With the Shamrock leaving the WABA, the Maples have decided to leave the league as well, according to the social media post.
“The LA Maples have made the difficult decision to leave the WABA,” the post stated. “Our opponents for this upcoming weekend have left the league leaving us with no option but to also look for competition elsewhere. Our games for this weekend have been cancelled. This was an incredibly tough decision and we thank our players and supporters for riding with us through the tumultuous past two seasons.”
LA and Mount Vernon are two of the three teams in the WABA’s North Upper Division. The third team is the Rochester Royal Ballers of Rochester, New York.
The Maples have had multiple games canceled since they entered the league in 2022. They were supposed to play Rochester at the Armory on July 13-14, but the Royal Ballers forfeited the games.
During the 2023 season, the New England Trailblazers and New York Harlem Lady Underdogs forfeited games that were supposed to be played at the Armory.
After losing to the Shamrocks in both games in Lewiston in the middle of August last year, the Maples forfeited the two games scheduled later in the month in Mount Vernon, New York.
The Maples finished the 2023 season with a 2-4 record.
In the inaugural season in 2022, the Maples had two games canceled and the team went 4-1 in the regular season and earned a playoff berth before losing to the Shamrocks.
In their social media post, the team said: “The Maples are in no way finished and we look forward to playing competitive women’s basketball in Maine in the future.”
LA Maples owner Joshua Brister didn’t respond to phone calls from the Sun Journal on Wednesday.
