WILTON — Selectpersons rescinded a vote Tuesday to close the boat ramp on Canal Street during the Blueberry Festival from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 2 because there will be no boat rides this year.

Organizers of the boat ride event could not get insurance in time for the festival. The carrier had a lot of questions, she said. The ramp will now be open during that time. It will still be closed from 7 a.m. to midnight on Aug. 3 for fireworks preparation.

Board Chairperson Tiffany Maiuri said the Friends of Wilson Lake tried to work with an insurance carrier but couldn’t get the insurance in time for the event.

The board also voted to close Colby Miller Road from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 2.

Events Coordinator Renee Woodard asked for the closure due to the current condition of Colby Mill Road for the safety of the Blueberry Festival 5K runners.

“Storm damage to the edges of the road and ditches mixed with multiple surface areas with cracked or missing pavement will make it difficult for runners to safely run a straight path and remain on one side of the road,” according to Woodard. “Closing the road for a brief time will allow runners to maneuver around the road obstacles without the worry of vehicle traffic,” she wrote in her request.

John Masse, public works director, did a lot of work on the road, Woodard said, but it is safer to close it for the race.

The Fire Department plans to be present at each end of the road and would use barricades to close the road if approved, she wrote.

Woodard has looked for alternative 5K routes and did not see any other reasonable route, she said.
