AUBURN — A Lewiston teen driver rear-ended a school bus transporting elementary school students Wednesday evening, Deputy Chief of Police Tim Cougle said Thursday.

No major injuries were reported, but three students onboard had hospital visits for “complaints of pain,” Cougle said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Washington Park Road in Auburn as the bus was taking kids home after their very first day of school.

The 2020 Blue Bird school bus operated by Pauline Paradis of Auburn was rear-ended by a 2022 Nissan Altima, driven by a 17-year-old driver from Lewiston. The driver was not identified.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Cougle said.

“Bus 21 transports students who attend Walton and Sherwood Heights Schools,” Superintendent Susan Dorris said Thursday.

“There has been no disruption to the bus routes,” Dorris said. “Fortunately, there were no serious injuries,” she added.

One student was taken to a local hospital by Auburn Fire Rescue for complaints of pain. Two other students were taken to the hospital by their parents, “also for complaints of pain,” Cougle said.

Poland Fire Rescue was on the scene to oversee patient evaluations, Cougle added.

According to the police report, the school bus sustained minor cosmetic damage; the Nissan Altima incurred about $2,000 in damages.
