LIVERMORE FALLS — At the Aug. 20 meeting, selectmen approved closing the town office at 5 p.m. on Halloween for the Trunk or Treat event.
“We are getting some questions on that already,” Town Clerk Doris Austin said. “We want to do it Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m. It is a Thursday night. I have worked with a few other businesses to get this going. We want to get the word out there. To have more people do that, more community involvement.”
Selectman Bruce Peary said he would be there, it was fun last year.
Town Manager Carrie Castonguay said there had been some discussion after last year about trying to consolidate things as there were so many similar events going on in town.
Austin said that hasn’t been decided, she has just begun working on it. She is looking into changing things so people can line up in the parking lot and “go around so that it brings people up around and through versus right directly in front on the road and back.”
“It is great for the community,” Selectman Jim Long noted.
“It is so much fun,” Peary stated. “It is so rewarding to see all of those people and all of those kids. The kids are focused on the candy but the parents are so appreciative. They all say “thank you” and “this is wonderful” and how much they appreciate that because the kids get to be around other kids and plus with the involvement of the police and fire departments. Kids were scared to death to go anywhere near Mike Adcock until he started handing stuff out and then it was like, “OK.” It was great.”
In other holiday business Austin said a date hasn’t been set yet, but she is working with Santa and Mrs. Claus to see when they are available. “We do want them back at the gazebo again,” she stated. “Last year we did it on a Sunday night. I would kind of like to move that up to a Saturday, so we are looking for suggestions.”
“When it comes to Trunk or Treating, Mr. and Mrs. Santa, as the board is there anything we can do to help,” Chair William Kenniston asked.
“If you want to close the office [early] that day so we can all be out there that would be nice,” Austin said.
In May the board approved new office hours. The new hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The office is closed on Friday.
“Anyone who wants to buy any candy to donate, I will be happy to take it because we went through a lot of candy,” Austin said.
“By far,” Peary agreed. “I thought I had bought enough for a lifetime and I was out by 6:15 and there were still troves of kids coming. Thank goodness a lot of people had contributed candy because I was able to borrow and keep my little space going. It is a good thing.”
“None of us are wearing something saying, “I am on the board” but it is nice that the board is involved in that,” Peary said. It is a chance for people to see the board doing something other than their watching livestreams of board meetings, he added.
