LEWISTON – Democrat Julie McCabe, a Lewiston public school teacher, hopes to serve as Lewiston’s next state representative in House District 93.

Democrat Margaret Craven, who has held the seat since 2018, is not seeking reelection.

Craven, who is also a former state senator with a long record of public service, backs McCabe to be her successor.

“Julie is a dedicated teacher, community member and leader. I know that as a parent of young children she will be a fierce advocate for Lewiston families in the State House,” Craven said in a prepared statement.

McCabe faces former Lewiston City Council member Robert McCarthy in the contest.

McCabe has been a teacher in Maine for 12 years and serves as the building representative for the Lewiston Education Association. She teaches history and English at the Next STEP program at Lewiston High School.

She said she aims to expand vocational programming in Maine middle and high schools “to keep students engaged in relevant, hands-on education and help prepare the next generation for the workforce.”

“Exploring and preparing for a career in high school should be as common as writing an

essay or learning algebra. Let’s grow and multiply the successes of Lewiston Regional Technical Center tenfold across the state,” she said in a prepared statement.

She also wants to address the state’s housing shortage and to promote more workforce training for adults.

McCabe, who graduated from Bates College in Lewiston in 2012, holds a master’s degree in government from Johns Hopkins University.

A volunteer Lewiston recreation coach, she is raising two children with her husband, Matt. She played for the Lewiston Maples in 2022, a women’s semiprofessional basketball team.
