AUBURN — Temple Shalom plans to host the local Jewish community Monday as part of a statewide commemoration marking a year since the deadly Hamas attack on Israel.

“The main gathering will be at Temple Beth El in Portland,” Rabbi Sruli Dresdner said Friday. “Synagogues all over the state are participating via Zoom, both contributing and then also being able to see what everybody else is doing.”

The anniversary of the attack coincides with two major Jewish holidays this year, Rosh Hashanah on Oct. 3 and 4, and Yom Kippur on Oct. 12, Dresdner said.

“The community is shattered, really,” he said. “There really hasn’t been closure because the event was so horrific that it would take a long time. The recovery is very difficult anyway, but we haven’t been able to have any kind of closure because the hostages are still there and the wars are going on and there’s a wide range of reactions in the Jewish community.”

It has been a particularly difficult year for the Jewish people in the area, Dresdner said. “We’re also dealing with a lot of anti-Israel, sometimes anti-Jewish sentiment. The kids are feeling it in the schools. We are feeling it in the streets sometimes,” he said.

“It’s complicated. The holiday that we just finished observing … it was cathartic and there was a lot of intensity and reacting to everything that’s been going on. We take a lot of comfort in being together and being with each other and other Jewish communities,” he added.

Dresdner called for support. “We appreciate when people recognize that it’s a difficult time for the Jewish community. Just to let us know that they’re thinking about us, maybe praying for us, that means a lot to us,” he said. “I should also point out that other communities, particularly communities of faith, Christian communities, have been very, very supportive.”

“Everyone is welcome to attend,” Dresdner said. With security measures in place for Monday evening’s gathering, he added that it is an opportunity for folks to come sit together with their Jewish neighbors and show support. Temple Shalom is located at 74 Bradman St. in Auburn.
