MEXICO — A Rumford man was arrested Thursday, charged with sexually assaulting a 69-year-old woman at her home in Mexico.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office charged 47-year-old Mark Sturtevant with gross sexual assault, Maj. Dana Thompson of the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release Friday.

Sturtevant was taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris where he was still being held Friday on $20,000 cash bail, a corrections officer said.

Shortly after midnight Thursday, police were called to a home in Mexico for a report of a sexual assault. The victim was taken to Rumford Hospital where she was examined, treated and later released, police said.

The woman suffered bruises and abrasions in addition to the sex assault, according to the release.

Police said Sturtevant and the woman had met earlier in the evening.

“This is an isolated incident,” the release said, “and the victim and the suspect met in a public setting prior to the assault.”

Sturtevant had recently been convicted of domestic assault in connection with an incident reported in September 2022, according to court records. He was sentenced to six months in jail but the sentence was suspended and Sturtevant was placed on probation.
