WALES — Two men were hospitalized and a third was jailed following a brawl on Bradstreet Drive on Thursday.
Walter Rines, 36, of 15 Meadow Lane, Sabattus, was arrested by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office on charges of assault and elevated aggravated assault. He was arrested at his home Thursday morning.
Police said the assault left two men with serious injuries. Both were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
One of the victims, police said, was later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland due to the extent of his injuries.
Sheriff’s investigators did not release the names of the two victims. They also did not describe how the assaults occurred, although police said both victims were being treated for head injuries.
Sheriff’s investigators were being assisted by Sabattus police and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit as their investigation into the alleged assaults continued.
Rines was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where bail was originally set at $20,000. After Rines made a court appearance Friday, bail was increased to $50,000.
A charge of elevated aggravated assault typically indicates that a suspect intentionally caused serious bodily injury to another with a dangerous weapon or engaged “in conduct that manifests a depraved indifference to the value of human life.”
