State referendum Question 3 reads: “Do you favor a $10,000,000 bond issue to restore historic buildings owned by governmental and nonprofit organizations, with funds being issued contingent on a 25% local match requirement from either private or nonprofit sources?”
As a member of the board of directors of the nonprofit Poland Spring Preservation Society, I encourage all voters to vote yes on Question 3.
Since 1975, the society has worked diligently to repair, maintain and preserve both the Maine State Building (1892) and the All Souls Chapel (1912), two historic buildings located in Poland Spring and both on the National Register of Historic Places.
Despite our efforts to raise money and seek grants, the cost of maintaining these two buildings is enormous. Although I cannot guarantee that money from this referendum will go directly to these two buildings, all historic buildings in Maine are in need of maintenance and preservation.
I hope people join me in keeping the history of Maine alive by voting yes on referendum question 3.
